Mary Jane Corbett endured enough hardship in India for two lifetimes. Born in Calcutta and labeled “country bottled” by British expatriates, she spent her entire life trying to gain acceptance from her countrymen. Her first husband was killed by rebels during the Great Mutiny as she fled to safety with her three young children. While under siege, she met a British sergeant to whom she married shortly after the mutiny ended. He also brought three children to the union and, together with Mary Jane, had nine more children over the next 20 years. In 1880, she miraculously escaped a devastating mudslide that killed 151 neighbors. The following year her second husband died prematurely, leaving her destitute with several children at home. Defying convention, she was forced to seek employment for her family’s survival. Mary Jane’s strong Irish determination, steadfast faith, plus an unexpected twist of fate enabled her to finally achieve the respect for which she longed.
Note: Two of Jim Corbett’s legendary man-eating tiger and leopard hunting adventures are included.
