Jewel Town is a peaceful town crowned by a magnificent castle. Granted unsurpassed beauty by a regiment of fairies, the town’s girls are indeed the true jewels of the village. But when the town is betrayed by a bad fairy and invaded by villainous creatures, the girls are covered with ugly potato bags for their protection. They are reduced to slavery, but one amongst them, Ninita, escapes to freedom. She is conflicted between her need to uncover herself and a fear to commit a sin. With the help of fairies, she finds enough strength to return to town. Her plan? To unveil Jewel Town’s girls and re-establish their rights. Ninita’s string of adventures eventually brings the young reader to a happy ending.
About the Author Aryana Zavosh is a research scientist of Middle Eastern origin and mother of a nine-year-old daughter. In an era of world globalization, with women racing to freedom and power, we are witnessing an emerging movement of covered faces. Aryana believes there is a need for younger women to differentiate between symbols of oppression, like covers or veils, and traditional hand-crafted shawls and laces made to protect hair from wind and sun. Thus by using children’s own language and symbols, she attempts in The Unveiling of Jewel Town’s Girls to address the confusion surrounding dress codes for women.
