1947. His father was a U.S. Army Major, assigned to the American
Consulate. His mother was an Australian nurse.

lettuce in Salinas to teaching college in Nebraska.
He has been married to Ella, his college
sweetheart, for thirty-eight years. They have a daughter and two
grandchildren.
