| About the Book
Over the past
millennium, human civilization rose from meager industrial
beginnings on Earth to cover the entire galaxy. Nation states gave
way to disparate interstellar empires with conflicting ideologies:
democratic, totalitarian, theocratic, corporatist. Older bigotries
died out, but different circumstances brought new excuses to hate.
A new form of life
was recently added to this chaotic mix. Synthans, human in appearance,
are robots with full thought and emotion. Conceived as property and
incapable of violence without the permission of their owners, they
have nevertheless sought freedom as they could.
Now a crisis has
emerged. Rumors are spreading of exploitation and atrocity of a
planetary scale. In search of the truth of this devastation stands
only the weakest of the galactic empires, its efforts led by a
military synthan. Pitted against her are the corporate interests of
her own government, a radical synthan rights group gone astray, a
religion that condemns her very existence, and the most brutal
government ever to subvert a free people.
