It’s 1939. Imagine you’re nineteen years old like Bill Harris. He knows what he must do when war is declared. His dad was in the 14-18 war, so Bill joins the infantry only to spend the next two years guarding the English coastline against an invasion that never happens. So when the newly formed Parachute Regiment calls for volunteers for “offensive operations,” Bill doesn’t hesitate. He finds out all about “offensive operations” in North Africa, in Sicily and at Arnhem. War is a mad thing, a brutal slayer of human life. Can his faith withstand it? Could yours? It’s 1940. Imagine you’re eighteen and you’ve started nurse’s training, like Anne Linton. The hospital rigors of those days were hard enough even without the war but how do you cope when your boyfriend goes overseas and you know he’s at the sharp end? Or when your lad goes missing in action and you are nursing wounded men from the battlefront with injuries that break your heart? What would it do to your faith? Would you have any faith left?
