About the Book

When I Was a Little Girl, and Other Short Stories of My Life is an autobiographical collection of stories chronicling Wilma J. Dutton’s Depression-era childhood and a time in which family, friends and the town you grew up in were more important than just about anything else. Divided into three sections, the book begins with a portrait of the Nebraska town of Havelock and an introduction to Wilma’s neighborhood, her parents and grandparents, and the family’s proud heritage. The middle section focuses on Wilma’s days as a little girl, describing how she learned some of life’s important lessons the "hard way." The third section takes the reader from her high school years to the present time, highlighting the importance of friends during her teen years and, above all else, spotlighting the unwavering love and overwhelming support she has received from her family over the years.

About the Author

Wilma J. Dutton was born January 26, 1933, in the middle of the Great Depression and a fierce blizzard in Havelock, a suburb of Lincoln, Nebraska. Wilma, one of five children born to Don and Florance Shirey, graduated from Northeast High School in 1950 and married Dick D. Dutton in 1951. While Dick, who was soon drafted into the army, was serving in Korea, Wilma lived with her parents and worked as a secretary for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. Dick returned from Asia, and by 1956, the couple had three children. Their first son’s health prompted the family to relocate to Arizona, and by 1962, two more children had been born. When her youngest child started kindergarten, Wilma went back to school, earning a B.A. from Arizona State University in 1972 and an M.A., also from ASU, in 1976. In 1972, Wilma began her teaching career and remained in the classroom for 24 years until her 1996 retirement. Sadly, Wilma lost a beloved son that same summer. Now happily retired and as busy as ever, Wilma and Dick continue to enjoy life and their family – especially their grandchildren – while also traveling, writing, and working to stay healthy.
