About
the Author
Wilma J. Dutton was
born January 26, 1933, in the middle of the Great Depression and a
fierce blizzard in Havelock, a suburb of Lincoln, Nebraska. Wilma, one
of five children born to Don and Florance Shirey, graduated from
Northeast High School in 1950 and married Dick D. Dutton in 1951.
While Dick, who was soon drafted into the army, was serving in Korea,
Wilma lived with her parents and worked as a secretary for Goodyear
Tire and Rubber Co. Dick returned from Asia, and by 1956, the couple
had three children. Their first son’s health prompted the family to
relocate to Arizona, and by 1962, two more children had been born.
When her youngest child started kindergarten, Wilma went back to
school, earning a B.A. from Arizona State University in 1972 and an
M.A., also from ASU, in 1976. In 1972, Wilma began her teaching career
and remained in the classroom for 24 years until her 1996 retirement.
Sadly, Wilma lost a beloved son that same summer. Now happily retired
and as busy as ever, Wilma and Dick continue to enjoy life and their
family – especially their grandchildren – while also traveling,
writing, and working to stay healthy.
