About the Book

This collection of twenty-four short stories embraces a wide range of provocative subjects and ideas. Some have been hidden away in the attic of my mind and kept safe from prying eyes until now. Some of the poems are fictitious, and some are based upon real episodes of my life. A few of these sketches have a little twist thrown in, a dash of color, an accent, an embellishment...

Murder, AIDS, insanity, love, war, secrets, money, weather, friends are among the themes that decorate my writing. The emotional elements of life - stress, loneliness, anger, or sadness – color my words. A still life painting of what we deal with everyday. A woman’s secret one-night-stand threatens to end her marriage and maybe her life. A man looks in the mirror and sees his face, but it is someone else’s eyes looking back at him, determined to cloud his judgment and manipulate his mind. Poetic snapshots of the realities of life.

Some will make you laugh. Others will make you think. Some will find you nodding in agreement. Others may make you cringe in conflict. Some may even provoke hatred or highlight disappointment. As in the stories of real life, nothing is always the way we want it to be. Our life stories are not drawn in black and white. Look between these covers and you might like what you see.

About the Author

John E. King was born July 1957 to Annie Lee and Charlie King Jr. He was raised in rural Georgia where farm work dominated the majority of his school years. In an effort to break free of the low paying, physically demanding farm work, he joined the Army.

King spent 28 years serving his country, with three tours in Korea, two tours in Germany, and one tour spent in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm/Shield. He retired from the military in August 2003 and now is pursuing various other interests. Those include poetry and inventions. King says, “Now I’m taking this opportunity to make my dreams come true.”
