| About the Book
Using poetry to delve into the mind of a woman who lives with
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Inside the Mind of a
Borderline sheds light on the suffering of an estimated ten million
Americans. Because BPD covers such a broad spectrum of symptoms, it
has been and continues to be difficult to diagnose and treat. In
actuality, individuals with BPD suffer from bits and pieces of a
wide range of other mental illnesses and are often stigmatized
because of their symptoms. Misconceptions abound, with some
believing that intense mood swings and rage occur for no reason,
when in fact there are concrete causes for these displays. Others
believe that borderlines are involved only in intense, turbulent
relationships. To debunk these and other common myths, this book
will bring readers on a realistic journey inside the borderline’s
mind and through the pain and emptiness that millions of men and
women live with and try to control – with little success -- every
day of their lives.
About
the Author
Valencia Mitchell was born in Agana, Guam in 1982 and moved to
San Diego one year later. Following her parents’ divorce, Valenica,
her mother and younger siblings moved to Minnesota, starting a
series of moves that took her to six schools in as many years. She
struggled with making and keeping friends, and spent much of her
time alone. While pursuing a doctorate degree in pharmacy, Valencia,
then 20, was hospitalized and diagnosed with Borderline Personality
Disorder. In an attempt to open up her shell, find herself and show
the world what “borderlines” live with, Valencia has written this
personal, honest, and touching account.
