| About the Book
Through Dangers, Toils and Snares... "Seems like trouble's your
middle name, McGrath." It’s easy to understand why Matron said that.
Nursing Officer Colleen McGrath, who trained with Anne (n) Linton*,
saw plenty of trouble during the war. *See
Sound of Battle, by the
same author. Her commanding officer in Italy inveighed against her
for “intolerable” behaviour towards the Chaplaincy. She avoided
court martial only through the shortage of nurses in the Far East,
where the CO sent her to get rid of her. In less than a month, she
escaped strafing, bombing, shipwreck and a knife attack. In
Calcutta’s Grand Hotel, she broke a vase over the head of a drunken
special forces officer and had to be taken into protective custody.
On the Gothic Line in Italy and later in Burma, she encountered
suffering that beggared belief. But her greatest ordeal was yet to
come - back home. The Great Enemy sometimes targets particular
individuals and Colleen was one. Nevertheless, she would be blessed
with grace abounding and in the end find her desired haven, with the
man she loved.
