Now a weathy young woman in her own right, Suzanne establishes herself in Quito’s society in order to fulfill her pledge of revenge. Though she methodically begins to implement her plan, she soon comes to doubt the hatred instilled in her by her mother. Torn between her pledge to her mother and her own kinder heart, Suzanne struggles to overcome the loathing she feels toward the Cantrells. In the end, as the secrets of the Cantrells and the Hassels are revealed, love, compassion, understanding, and forgiveness prevail.
About the Author Orvilla Johns, an eighty-one year old widow, currently resides in an upscale retirement community in Houston, Texas. She has been blessed with a wonderfully creative mind, and is possessed of a youthful outlook, and self-sufficient demeanor. Originally a native of Los Angeles, Orvilla lived in Quito, Ecuador as a young bride where her husband was a captain with Pan American-Grace Airways. Soon thereafter, he flew for Shell Oil Company as they pursued oil explorations in the jungles of Ecuador where she accompanied him with their infant son. The Johns family lived in the jungle under primitive conditions where they hired natives to cut clearings to establish airfields. Orvilla’s knowledge of the jungle, presented so descriptively, is therefore genuine, as is her representation of life in the city of Quito. Orvilla and her husband, Carroll Lee Johns, settled in Houston, Texas upon their return from Ecuador, and brought back many fascinating items from their time in the jungle including three shrunken heads. These shrunken heads, together with other unique artifacts, were generously donated to a museum in Houston so they could be shared with the public. Together, Orvilla and her husband owned and operated the Johns Car Clinic located outside of Houston for many years. They continued to enjoy traveling to exotic locations throughout their life together up until Carroll’s death at the age of 93.
