| About the Book
When I was a teenager and walking through the
streets of my hometown early in the morning I saw the horizon in
front of me beckoning me to see the world. My book will take you
through the passages of my life, from Belen, Columbia to Miami
Florida and ultimately to Brooklyn NY. I resided in Brooklyn where I
met my future wife Eileen. There in Brooklyn we raised two
wonderful sons. Many hardships followed in the beginning of our
life together but we met each challenge with pride and joy and
learned to deal with all these challenges.
About the
Author
My name is Michael Balaguera and I was born in
the foothills of a small picturesque town called Belen, in the state
of Boyaca, Colombia. I was one of ten children. Although we didn’t
have much money, we were a very happy, well-adjusted, close-knit
family. I was the person to establish the first soccer team in my
hometown. When I was in my teens I started the town’s first newspaper
called LaVerdad.
If you want good baking potatoes you
ask for Idaho. If you want good cheese, it has to be from Wisconsin.
But in Colombia if you want good cheese and butter you ask for Belen’s
brand. Also from my region come the best emeralds in the world.
I was the adventurous
type of person, always wanting to see what was on the other side of
the hill. One of those hills was the United States of America. I
always dreamed about going there someday. I saved my money, which
was not a lot, $150.00, and in 1972 I finally arrived at Miami
International Airport, USA.
Now I am happily married
to my wonderful wife Eileen and we have two sons, Brian and Preston.
Life for me in the United States was difficult at the beginning, but
as years passed I forged ahead and I conquered most of my dreams,
including becoming a U.S. Citizen.
