| About the Book
To be an adult is to know how to make appropriate decisions.
Parents should try to help their children develop that skill, but we
live in a society in which the entertainment media shapes our
worldview and it often tells us that what matters is what I want or
what makes me feel good, not what is right. The way that schools
deal with issues of right and wrong, if they address the issues at
all, often mimics the mass media because teachers are not trained to
analyze such issues. Parents also often avoid issues of right or
wrong. They provide at best some idea of what they think is right or
wrong, but seldom give any rationale or method for moral decisions.
Adam Stamm provides a step-by-step decision-making process that can
be modeled to develop methods of analyzing choices and making
appropriate choices. The goal is not for everyone to use the same
method or make the same decisions. The goal is for everyone to think
about issues of right and wrong and engage in a serious analysis of
options. If we learn to examine issues from a variety of
perspectives, we will make better decisions and increase our
understanding and respect for each other. There will always be
arguments about what the right thing is, but the foundation of this
book is that the quest to determine the right thing is good, noble
and otherwise worthwhile.
