About the Book

This incisive exploration of cultural differences delves into the unspoken facets of human culture.  Through the context of the International Space Station Mission environment, the book illustrates how cross-cultural differences can affect crew performance, and suggests ways to overcome their effects in the workplace.  By recognizing that culture is crucial to the survival of the human species, the book makes a well-founded argument that cultural differences MUST be understood if harmony in Space and on Earth is to be achieved. Cross-cultural differences range from language differences and food preferences to differences in the ability to handle stress, social isolation, and even in the perception of trustworthiness among peers.  These differences can cause a variety of interpersonal problems that, left unaddressed, can affect the well-being of personnel and the overall psychological and emotional climate among crewmembers.  This adverse environment can hinder performance and affect the success of a given mission. The author of Harmony in Space posits that cultural differences are at the center of war, human and societal conflict, stereotyping and prejudice.  In essence, the book holds that cross-cultural education, training, and the careful selection of “culturally fit” personnel, can reduce the threat of cultural misunderstanding and prevent problems of cataclysmic proportions.

About the author

Leonid Katkovsky was born in 1960 in the former USSR, in the beautiful city of Chernovitsy, not far from the Romanian border.  Historically, that region belonged to the Austrian Empire and Romania.  The USSR then annexed it in 1940.

Katkovsky grew up in a multiethnic society where the official motto of “friendship and brotherhood among all peoples” coexisted with the unofficial reality of inter-ethnic stereotypes, prejudices, and dislikes. Since his childhood, Katkovsky was interested deeply in both medicine and space exploration.  He graduated from the medical school in Belarus in 1985.  In 2000, he graduated from the Aerospace Medicine residency at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.  Two of his lifetime passions finally intertwined as he accepted a position of Flight Surgeon for the USAF. Katkovsky has been perplexed throughout his life by the complexity of human cultures, interpersonal relationships, and the multitude of problems that exist in relationships among humans.  His goal has become to study these issues in-depth, to gain a better understanding of them and to seek improved solutions.   He also hopes to help prevent problems in cross-cultural and interpersonal relationships in general, and in future space exploration, in particular.  This book is Katkovsky’s contribution to the solution of problems in cross-cultural relationships.
