Four Arrows Squadron

Four Arrows Squadron

 by Joel T. Nichols

"A fitting tribute to the Americans who fought above the trenches in that all but forgotten war."    Lt. Col. Fred Beltz

The Four Arrows Squadron did not exist, but the story of the squadron is the story of American pursuit aviation on the western front in 1918.  The squadron's story is more than a battle narrative; it is a story of men in war and is as applicable today as it was nearly a century ago.  This book is a tribute to the Americans who served in The Great War on the land, sea, or in the air.  They should not be forgotten.

About the Book

About the Book

"Four Arrows Squadron is a stirring and realistic story of war.   High School students who read fiction but who claim to dislike history will learn something from this novel and enjoy doing so." Rodney Atkinson, Educator

"From the fascinating historical perspective of World War I, Four Arrows Squadron shows us that the principles of personal courage and camaraderie remain unchanged from the beginning of fighter aviation through our present day." - Lt. Col. Bob Hervatine

The inscription on the World War I Victory Medal refers to the war as "The Great War for Civilization," also known at the time as a "great struggle between good and evil."  Of all the Americans who answered the call to serve, none better represented the idealism and confidence of the nation in that age than those who fought with the Army Air Service.

The confidence of the inexperienced young pilots was tried by fire in the summer of 1918 when they faced massed formations of the best planes and pilots that Germany could put in the air.  And their idealism was sorely tested as they continued to kill and die throughout the campaigns of autumn, even as they pressed on to victory.
