About the Book
Antigua is a tiny island in the Eastern Caribbean. Like so many others in the region, it was host to slavery. This is a true story of Africans who were enslaved and brought to the island on the plantations in and around the village of Liberta before it was formed. Dehumanized, unchurched, and worked like animals, they suffered like all the slaves in the New World. Several Moravian missionaries came to the island and worked with slaves on the plantations in the years of their oppression. While teaching them Christianity, these missionaries strived to create better conditions for the Afro-Antiguans. On August 1, 1834, emancipation came and the village of Liberta was born. This is the story of the Afro-Antiguans’ progress from slavery to freedom and a village that has transformed into a free society, culturally, and socially with a thriving economical stance. With details on many of the historical sites of the village, this book chronicles the survival, hope, and liberation of a proud people.
