SELLING BOOKS By Deborah Greenspan
Recently, I spoke to a senior editor at Harper Collins about distributing books. He said that he personally will not take on any author who won’t get out there and do the book signings and the public appearances. Books, whether published through POD or through traditional publishers, sell because the authors promote them. And while POD is a little harder to promote, those authors who take the time and make the effort do reap the rewards.
The most effective way to distribute and sell your books is to combine the review process (getting books reviewed in the media, doing author interviews etc.) with a book signing tour. The idea is to set up your book signings so that they occur at the same time that an article comes out in the local paper or when your radio interview hits the airwaves. Get local papers to review the book, do the book signing, and most importantly, leave a few books behind in each store that you visit. The store can sell these books for you, and if they do sell them, they’ll want to order more.
