What About Offset Printing? |
POD printing
has many advantages, especially when a
book first comes out. POD is great for people who don't expect to sell
thousands of books. And because of the low cost of POD digital printing compared
to other forms of self-publishing, it's a good way to "test the waters" for your
book, to see if reviewers like it, and if people will buy it.
But the
per book cost through POD is much higher than it is for books printed in large
quantities. This is because the cost of the POD setup is relatively low,
while the setup for offset printing is very expensive. Printing
in large quantities offsets the cost of that setup: The larger the run, the lower the cost of
production per book.*
Once the
number of books to be printed goes over 2,000 - 3,000 books, the cost of offset printing
goes down dramatically versus POD printing. So, if you already know that
you're going to need a lot of books, or if you already know that there's a
market for your books, you may want to consider having them printed in quantity.

*That's
not actually the origin of the term, but it's an easy way to
remember the difference.
