The Communication Revolution
Publishing in the 21st Century
by Deborah Greenspan
A few hundred years ago,
Gutenberg invented the printing press, and the world was changed
forever. No longer were ideas the sole province of the powerful;
printing made them accessible to all who could read. During the
twentieth century, literacy exploded, but the ideas printed for the
general public were still filtered through powerful institutions.
These “gatekeepers” decided which ideas would be disseminated to the
public and which ones would not.
Today, we’re in the midst of a
new revolution. The advent of digital printing technology has made it
possible for anyone to write and print a book. New ideas,
controversial ideas, and old ideas dressed up in new ways are all
making their way out into the world. But the greatest strength of
this new technology is also its greatest weakness. When anyone can
print a book, there is no way to guarantee that digitally printed
books will be readable. Many would-be writers couch their thoughts in
grammatical constructions that are impossible for others to understand
and interpret, and one badly written book casts doubt on all. That’s
why Llumina was created.
We believe in the revolution,
and are using our skills as writers and editors to help others print
well-edited, grammatically correct, easy-to-read books that the public
will appreciate. Our mission is to help writers, at all levels of
experience and skill, make their ideas accessible to the world.
