Book Expo 2003
BEA 2003 -- an Event to Remember! It only happens once a year and this year it was in L.A. Our booth was bright with posters, our catalog was beautiful, and our book covers attracted lots of attention. We handed out sell sheets and talked up our books to everyone who came by. Deborah and June were in constant motion, making sure that Llumina’s presence was felt. Llumina catalogs were distributed freely to buyers, distributors, bookstore owners, and other attendees. The highlight of the Expo for Deborah and June was that they were able to meet authors, Glenn Siler, Greg Giacana, Darleen Haynes, Rosalee Jaeger, Alan Klevit, and Marissa Marchan while they were at the Llumina booth promoting their books. “It was the most wonderful experience to meet all of them in person,” said June on her return to the office. Marissa Marchan said, “At least one producer got a copy of my book. The BEA experience was one of the most memorable days of my life. There were a lot of ‘big booths’ there, but I noticed that more people stopped by in your both to talk to you compared to the ‘big booths.’ More power to you all and thank you for a job well done!” “The best thing about it was meeting Deborah and June, who were professional and put a "face forward" that belies a POD-type publisher,” Alan Klevit said. “Of course, no surprise there, as that's been my experience with Llumina from the start: professional, responsive and caring. What I like best, though, beyond a family-like approach, is the continuing support, i.e., the peripheral programs to enhance sales after the publishing.” (Since the Expo, Alan has decided to take advantage of Llumina’s newest offering—the Book Signing Tour.) The Book Expo gave authors the opportunity to touch base with their audience. A young soldier approached Greg Giacana about his book Hear That Song of War. The soldier, who admitted to supporting the war in Iraq while never having actually fought in a war, was offered the opportunity to see war from a veteran’s point of view. Even though they were on opposite sides of the fence, Greg and the soldier were able to come together over a piece of literature. It was really powerful to see such an exchange between an author and a reader—and to see Greg succeed in promoting his book. Some 30,000 publishers, booksellers, librarians, and members of the press attended, and Deborah and June spent several hectic days talking to people and familiarizing them with Llumina’s books and services. This was a great place for Llumina and the attending authors to make contact with wholesalers, reviewers, and major publishers, and the response was positive. Since the Expo, we have been contacted by reviewers and magazines about how to receive review copies and how to reach authors who are interested in writing articles. The full impact of the BEA Expo has yet to be fulfilled, but the reaction so far has been fabulous. |
